C-reactive Protein (CRP) Test

What is CRP?

CRP is a protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation in the body. When the body is inflamed, the liver produces this protein, which is then transported to the bloodstream to protect the tissues. When you're hurt or infected, your body responds by launching an inflammatory reaction. Typically, the infected region is painful, red, and swollen.

The C-reactive protein (CRP) level in the body is measured in this test. CRP testing is divided into two categories. A routine test checks for extremely high inflammation levels. The extremely sensitive test can identify modestly elevated CRP levels, which are linked to atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries due to plaque buildup).

Why should you take a CRP test?

The CRP test is typically performed in conjunction with other tests to determine the risk of heart disease. It's an excellent predictor of cardiovascular illness and a useful tool for diagnosing a variety of ailments, including autoimmune diseases like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. It can also be useful to keep track of any inflammation-causing conditions. The CRP test can be used to ensure that your therapy is working properly if you have been diagnosed with a chronic disease.
